How to Reduce IPS Glow on Your Display (Explained)

Introduction
Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), particularly those utilizing In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, remain dominant in the display market. IPS panels offer superior off-axis viewing performance, but are susceptible to a phenomenon known as IPS glow. This effect arises from the inherent properties of the liquid crystal alignment and backlight diffusion within the panel. This article provides a technical overview of IPS glow, detailing its causes and offering practical methods to minimize its visibility

We specialize in collaborating with businesses to develop and produce high-quality televisions tailored to their specific market needs and brand identities.
Define An IPS Glow
A common characteristic of IPS LCDs is “IPS glow,” a phenomenon caused by the interaction of viewing angle and backlight distribution. Unlike ideal displays with uniform brightness across the entire screen, IPS panels can exhibit uneven luminance when viewed from an angle. This manifests as brighter corners or edges, sometimes accompanied by a perceived darkening in the central area. This effect is not a defect but an inherent property of the IPS technology, becoming more noticeable as the viewing angle increases
Note 1: The glow is more common on IPS(in-plane-switching) display, but VA(vertical alignment) has its glow too. Check it out later.
Note 2: IPS Glow ≠ Backlight Bleeding
The glow(IPS glow and VA glow) is the natural drawback of the LCD(liquid-crystal display) feature.
Backlight bleeding is more related to a failure of workmanship quality.

How to reproduce an IPS/VA glow?
If you see the IPS/VA glow on your display products, do not be worried. Here are a few steps to reproduce it.
- Adjust the indoor brightness to darken the environment where the display product is located.
- Try to find ways to make the display display a pure black screen. For example, the TV can read a black picture from the hard disk, and the monitor can directly open a black picture.
Also, please allow the display to be adjusted to maximum brightness. The goal is to achieve maximum contrast. - Please use the camera to get close to your display devices. When you get close to a suitable distance, a black cross shadow will appear.
- If you follow the above steps, you will observe the IPS glow phenomenon.

Why the IPS Glow Naturally Exist?
Main Reason: Drawback of LCD(IPS And VA) Technology
The difference between IPS and VA technology is the way how liquid crystals are arranged in a sandwich structure. IPS is in-plane-switching meaning that most of the liquid crystals are parallel to the glass, while VA is vertically aligned to the glass. When our eyes/cameras focus on the screen, parts of the liquid crystals are not fully perpendicular or parallel to our eyes. These weird angles will result in an uneven distribution of light passing through our eyes. As a result, we can feel the IPS glow.

How to Reduce IPS Glow(Soft Solution)
After reading the previous content above and understanding why the glow exists, we can try to avoid the glow with tips now.
Adjust Viewing Angle
View from the center: The IPS glow becomes significantly more apparent when we view the screen from an angle, rather than directly in front of it. Although the specification from the LCD panel says they have a vertical 178° and horizontal 178° viewing angle, it is still recommended that we watch our display product from the center.
Adjust viewing distance: The closer we sit next to a monitor/TV, the higher the possibility that we will notice the IPS glow. When we see the cross-shaped black shadow, we might as well sit back. It can be imagined that we need to focus the camera on the TV, and the cross-shaped black shadow is a state of virtual focus.
Adjust Display Setting
Adjust brightness: Lowering the brightness can reduce the overall light output, making the glow less noticeable. Another way is to increase indoor brightness.

How to Reduce IPS Glow(Hard Solution)
The key point of “hard solution” is related to the local dimming setting. Since the traditional LCD display will turn on all backlights(strips+bulbs) together, we can buy a new display with local dimming to reduce the glow.
Consider An OLED Display
An OLED display is not a LCD display anymore because an OLED display is self-emission as thin without any backlight. If we ask an OLED TV to display a completely dark image, then the screen is completed dark. Assume the OLED display is 3840×2160 pixels, then it has 3840×2160 local dimming zones. Based on this fantastic OLED feature, the glow is gone.

Consider A Display With MiniLED
Mini-LED technology significantly enhances LCD displays by incorporating hundreds of independently controlled dimming zones. This precise control allows for significantly deeper blacks and more vibrant highlights, effectively mitigating IPS glow in dark scenes.
Conclusion
In summary, IPS glow is a characteristic inherent to LCD display technology, stemming from the interaction of viewing angles and backlight uniformity. While it can be noticeable in certain conditions, particularly in dark scenes and off-center viewing, it’s not a defect.
