Chapter 1: Basic Concepts of TVs

TV, aka Television, is a valuable technology for human beings in the 20th century. It is a new media type compared to newspapers and radio. With a TV at home, a person can know what happened or what is happening far away.

Television can be separated into 2 parts(Tele + vision). “Tele” means something far away. “vision” means the content our eyes can see.

TV Basic Concept

With the word “television” and the meaning we consider a TV as a machine, a good definition of TV would be: Television is a system that converts live or recorded visual images with sounds into electrical signals, transmits them to various and distant locations through electromagnetic waves, and reproduces them instantly.

According to the definition above, the simplest TV can be made up of 3 parts. Record – Transmit – Receive

  1. Record is a stage of photoelectric conversion. The photoelectric conversion is usally made by camera . The other conversion is acoustic to electrical, which is usally made by microphone. After these 2 conversion, the video signal and audio signal are ready.
  2. Transmit is a stage of delivering video and audio signal.
  3. Receive is a reverse stage of record stage by turing video and audio signal back to light and sound.

TV Classification

Classified by color:

  1. Monochrome Television. The popular TV many years ago and a monochrome television only transmits the brightness of an object.
  2. Color Television. The recent popular TV which transmits brightness, color hue, and color saturation.

Classified by clarity:

  1. SDTV(Standard Definition Television)
  2. HDTV(High Definition Television)
  3. UHDTV(Ultra High Definition Television)

Classified by ways of transmission:

  1. Satellite Television
  2. Terrestrial Television
  3. Cable Television
  4. IPTV(Internet Protocol Television)

Classified by types of signal:

  1. Analog TV. Analog signal to represent images and sound.
  2. DIgital TV. Digital signal to represent images and sound.
