LED TV Aging Test Guide(2024)
Guangzhou Mianhong is an OEM TV manufacturer. We are committed to providing different quality solutions to meet the different needs of our customers. I am Jasmine, the sales manager of Mianhong TV Factory. The purpose of writing this article is to popularize the aging test of TV. Through this article, readers will know why we, as manufacturers, need to do aging test and how we do aging test.
Why do we need the TV aging Test?
TV sets need to undergo aging tests mainly to ensure their stability and reliability during long-term use. These tests can simulate various situations and environments that TV sets may encounter when working for a long time, helping manufacturers to discover potential design defects or component problems, so as to make improvements and corrections before the batch of TV products is put on the market.
Although the market says that LED lamps can reach a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours, and the same is true for TV backlights, the LED itself will weaken, and its brightness may not be as good as before when it reaches 50% of its lifespan.
Some potential problems can be detected by aging testing
- Stability test: Run the TV for a long period to see if there is any performance degradation or malfunction under continued use.
For this test, we usually switch from app to app to check if there is a performance issue. - Temperature and Environmental Test: Simulates operation under different temperature and humidity conditions to test the performance of the TV in various environments.
In this type of aging test, we test a group of TVs together, which will generate a lot of heat when fully turned on to simulate a hotter environment. - Power supply and withstand voltage test: Test the stability and safety of the power supply system to ensure normal operation under various voltage conditions.
If the TV fails this test, the motherboard may be burned out, rendering the TV useless. - ※※Screen test: Check the brightness decay of the screen after long-term use, and whether it is prone to pixel failure or damage.
This is the most important part of the burn-in test because it affects the most important part of the TV – the display quality.
What should we expect after the aging test?
Our aging tests usually last for a week. By using the right environment (temperature + high usage), the TV experiences the equivalent of several years of use in a short period of time.
- The Maximum Brightness: We will record the changes in brightness over time so that we can predict the backlight life of this TV. As a factory, we will try our best to ensure that the backlight attenuation speed is within a reasonable range.
- Inaccurate Color Display ΔE: Due to the special sandwich structure of LCD screens, its color filters and liquid crystal bias speed have some life limits. For example, color filters are usually made of organic materials, and although their lifespan can be relatively long under normal use conditions, they may fade, age or be damaged over time and under changing use conditions. This fading or aging may cause the screen to display inaccurate or dark colors.Usually the life of the color filter is longer than that of the backlight, but if the TV shows serious color cast in the aging test, then we need to suspect that there is something wrong with this batch of screens.
Edge LED Problems vs Direct LED
This is the content updated on August 6, 2024. The temperature has a great relationship with the optical structure (i.e. the installation method of the backlight). The backlight strip is the most powerful part in the TV, and each of the lamp beads in it will generate a lot of heat. If the heat is concentrated for a long time and cannot be dispersed, the heat will affect the optical film.
ELED (Edge LED) refers to the backlight strip of a TV installed from the edges of the four sides, usually directly below (large-size TVs) or on the left and right (small-size TVs). Famous brands like to use ELED because it can save space (because the light strip and lamp beads do not need to be fixed in the middle area of the back of the TV by screws), so their LCD TVs can be made relatively thin.
ELED technology has great advantages for small-size TVs, because small-size TVs require very little luminous flux, and ELED is a cost-saving method. If a small-size TV needs to achieve a brightness of more than 300nits, then DLED (direct LED) can compensate for this.
However, ELED has a potential defect for large-size TVs: excessive temperature. Large-size TVs require more luminous flux. Engineers need to evenly distribute the concentrated light from the bottom over the entire TV display area so that uniform light passes through the color filter in the liquid crystal glass to display good colors. If an ELED 75-inch TV has an area of 170cmx100cm and all its lights are at the bottom, it needs a super-powerful bulb group to achieve the standard uniform indoor standard 250nits brightness. As the factory conducted an aging test on this 75-inch TV, the answer is obvious. Its theoretical life will be lower than that of a TV using DLED technology. The optical film may become fragile after a long period of concentrated heating. If this TV happens to have a structure that “supports” the optical film, then this structure will be the last straw that breaks the camel’s back. The optical film will be destroyed by this structure, causing the light uniformity to be unbalanced. Therefore, when users turn on the TV, they will see a blade-like abnormally bright light spot.
DLED (Direct LED) is a technology that evenly installs light strips on the back of the TV. If the light strips/beads are installed densely enough, then we can define it as Full Array LED. Since the backlight strips are evenly distributed on the back of the TV, the power used by each bead will be less than that of ELED, causing less heat. At the same time, because DLED technology uses more thickness, there will be more heat dissipation space than ELED. The theoretical life of the optical film will be longer than that of ELED because the intensity of concentrated heating will be much lower.
Conclusion
TV aging test is an indispensable link. Without this link, the function of Quality Control will be completely ineffective.
